What Size Robot Mower Do I Need?
Share
The right robot mower should have enough capacity to maintain your lawn comfortably — not spend every available hour trying to keep up.
Measure the lawn, not the whole property
Start with the area that will actually be mown. Patios, buildings, borders, woodland and driveways do not count. An approximate figure is normally enough to create a sensible shortlist.
Do not choose purely on maximum area
Maximum area is important, but two 1,500 m² gardens can place very different demands on a mower. Long slopes, several separate lawns, narrow passages, rough terrain and heavy grass growth can all make the job harder.
Leaving some capacity in reserve generally gives you more flexibility with schedules and recovery after periods of rapid growth.
Small lawns — roughly up to 1,000 m²
For smaller domestic lawns, look at compact models such as the 308V, 305E NERA and 405VE NERA. The main decision here is often whether you value EdgeCut, AI vision, or both.
Medium lawns — around 1,000 to 1,500 m²
The 312V, 310E NERA and 410VE NERA cover this part of the range. Again, capacity is only part of the choice: EdgeCut and AI vision separate the models.
Large lawns and estates
Once you move beyond roughly 1,500 m², capacity and terrain become increasingly important. The 320 NERA, 430V NERA and 450V NERA step progressively upward in area capacity.
If the issue is steep or difficult ground rather than simple size, the 435X AWD NERA is the specialist option.
Commercial sites
Professional grounds need a different calculation because operating intensity matters as much as raw area. Husqvarna’s commercial EPOS® range includes different Standard and Sports capacity profiles, with the 580 EPOS aimed particularly at demanding sports turf.
A simple rule
Buy enough mower for the lawn you actually have, with sensible headroom for complexity. Do not pay for capacity you will never use — but do not choose a machine that will live at its limit either.
