Do Robot Mowers Need a Boundary Wire?
Share
No — a modern robot mower does not necessarily need a physical boundary wire. Many current machines use satellite positioning and a digital map to create virtual work areas, stay-out zones and transport paths.
How a traditional boundary wire works
Older and many current robot mowers use a low-voltage perimeter wire installed around the edge of the lawn. The mower detects the signal from that wire and uses it to stay inside the mowing area. It is proven technology and can still be a very good solution, particularly on sites with difficult satellite visibility.
How wire-free robot mowers work
A wire-free mower replaces the buried perimeter loop with virtual boundaries. You define the lawn in an app, and the mower uses satellite positioning together with a correction signal to understand where it is.
The exact correction method depends on the model. It can involve Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, cloud correction or a local reference station such as Husqvarna EPOS®.
What are the advantages of virtual boundaries?
- Easier changes: alter a work area in the app instead of moving cable.
- Temporary stay-out zones: exclude a trampoline, newly seeded patch or garden project digitally.
- Multiple zones: create separate areas with different schedules and cutting settings.
- No perimeter-wire breaks: there is no buried loop around the entire lawn to accidentally damage.
When can a physical wire still be useful?
Satellite-based systems need a usable view of the sky. Dense tree cover, tall buildings, narrow corridors beside structures and certain complicated garden layouts can make positioning harder.
Some NERA models can use virtual boundaries for most of the garden while retaining physical-wire support where that is the better engineering solution. The right answer is not always “wire-free at all costs”.
Does wire-free mean no installation work?
Not quite. You still need to choose a sensible charging-station position, confirm connectivity or correction-signal coverage and map the work areas properly. It is simply a different type of installation.
Which RMS mowers are wire-free capable?
The current Robot Mower Shop launch range is focused on wire-free capable Husqvarna models, from the compact Automower 308V through the NERA range and up to professional EPOS® machines.
